CONSUMER SPOT REMOVER GUIDE

This Spotting Guide is based upon the use of two excellent products @ www.HPbyD.com/CCrepair Both of these products were developed for Professional Cleaners.  They will far outperform products bought off the grocery store shelf.

SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER -HomePro Spot and Stain Remover gives professional results on wet-cleanable carpet and upholstery stains. It even works on many wet-cleanable clothing stains. HomePro Spot and Stain Remover is non-toxic and safe for use in the home, institution, or car. It will not leave sticky residue - there is no need to rinse with water.

HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER - HomePro Heavy Duty Spotter is ready for the toughest of spots and stains.  Removes a wide variety of stains from fabrics and carpet including: ink, markers, paint, lipsticks, mascara, crayons and many more! Also works on some hard surfaces.

FOOD & WATER-BASED SPILLSTypes of spills and spots typically found in this category:

Beer, coffee, soft drinks, Creme de Menthe, fruit juices, milk, tea, tomato juice, catsup, chocolate, egg, gravy, ice cream, mustard, grass stains, iodine, etc.

Most food spots and spills can easily be cleaned up by SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER  . Steps:

ü      Remove any excess material by blotting or scraping.

ü      Apply Avenge to a towel and blot onto stain and check results.

ü      If testing deemed safe, apply Avenge directly to the stain and agitate lightly with the towel.

ü      Apply light pressure with a dry portion of the towel to absorb the material from the fabric.

ü      Repeat if necessary.

NOTE: Some greasy food spills may require use of HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER to break down the oil. If oily residue results after completing step 4, apply HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER , agitate and then rinse using SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER .
INKS, COSMETICS & OILY SPILLSTypes of spills and spots often found in the category:

Ball point pen, permanent marker, lipstick, nail polish, asphalt, chewing gum, crayon, grease, wax etc.

Note: Most inks and cosmetics respond well to spotting with  HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER. Test by applying a verysmall amount of   HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER to the spot. Allow  HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER to dwell for one minute then gently blot with a white towel.  If some removal is apparent, then follow the steps below. If little or none of the spot comes up on the towel, call a Professional Carpet Cleanerfor advice. Some ink and cosmetic stains can be permanent.    Steps:

ü      Absorb, blot or scrape to remove excess material

ü      Apply  HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER directly to the spot and allow to dwell for one minute

ü      Gently blot to remove spot

ü      Repeat until no more material is being removed

ü      Apply SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER to remove final residue of spot and to rinse clean.

ü      Repeat if necessary.

PAINTS AND ADHESIVESTypes of spills and spots typically found in this category:

Acrylic paint, latex paint, varnish, oil stain, Elmers glue, rubber cement, contact cement, etc.

NOTE: Paints and adhesives come in two basic forms: water base and oil base. You should be able to tell the type by reading the original container and checking the suggested clean-up method. On fresh spills you will use SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER  for water-based products and  HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER  for oil or solvent-based products.

FRESH SPILLS THAT ARE STILL DAMP:

 Steps:

ü      Absorb, blot or scrape to remove excess material.

ü      Determine if spilled material is water or oil based.

ü      On water base spills use SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER . On oil based spills use HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER  .

ü      Apply spotter directly to the spill and agitate lightly with a towel. If spot is hard or crusty, allow spotter to remain for several minutes before continuing.

ü      Apply light pressure with a dry portion of the towel to absorb the material from the fabric.

ü      Repeat if necessary.

ü      If HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER  is used, do a final rinse with  SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER to remove any residue

DYES & OTHERS Types of spills and spots found in the category:

Red food dye, shoe dye, furniture dye, plant food, bleaches, rust, mildew stains, etc.

Note: Most dyes react with the fabric to become permanent. Some red food dyes are removable but the services of a Professional Carpet Cleaner may be required. Test for removal possibilities by applying SPOT AND STAIN REMOVER  or  HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER to towel and blotting on to the stain. If results are positive, then proceed with the 'Food' steps for water-based spills and the'Ink and Cosmetics' steps for oil-based spills.

HOME PRO PET STAIN AND ODOR REMOVER is ready for the toughest pet challenges. No matter which 'end' of your pet the problem comes from - fresh or old stains - the synergistic effect of unique stain and odor fighting ingredients works like nothing now available in consumer products.

HOME PRO ODOR ELIMINATOR is more than a pleasant fragrance covering up odors. The pleasant, light fragrance works directly on the source of the odor, neutralizing it immediately upon contact. Effective on all fibers, fabrics and surfaces not harmed by water.

How to Care for Your Carpet

When it comes to maintaining your carpet, one of the most critical areas of focus is the traffic areas. If ground in soil is not removed on a regular basis, the traffic areas will begin to wear excessively. The dirt is extremely abrasive against the fibers of the carpet as you walk back and forth on it. The second area of focus, of course, is spot removal. You must react to “danger” spots immediately. Red wine, red beverages, urine, blood, etc. can cause a permanent stain if not treated immediately. Listed below are the steps that you must take to properly maintain your carpeting.

Warranty

Copies of specific warranties on your carpet purchase may be available from your carpet retailer. Stain resist warranties can vary from 5 to 20 years. ALL STAIN RESIST WARRANTIES REQUIRE REGULAR CLEANING AND IMMEDIATE SPOT REMOVAL.

Vacuuming

Vacuum your carpet often. Once or twice a week at least. Vacuuming removes the sharp soil that can cut and slice the fiber causing premature wear. Much of this soil is not visible to the eye. Vacuum before the carpet looks soiled. Remove any loose particles such as loose food, leaves, pieces of crayon, bugs, etc. as these items can cause a spot on the carpet.
Professional Cleaning
As a general rule, professional cleaning by a professional, certified firm should take place about once per year. For extremely heavy traffic areas, cleaning may be required more often. Proper professional cleaning will not leave a sticky residue behind and can be done as many times per year as needed. MANY STAIN RESIST WARRANTIES REQUIRE PROFESSIONAL CLEANING EVERY 2 YEARS. Professional cleaning removes the damaging soil from the traffic areas that vacuuming has not been able to remove. WARNING: UNINFORMED CARPET CLEANERS MAY VOID THE WARRANTY, BE VERY SELECTIVE WHICH COMPANY YOU HIRE.
Spot Removal and Interim Cleaning
Immediate spot removal is key to a clean carpet. Great care also must be taken in how spot cleaning is performed. When a carpet is new, or has sufficient protector on it, plain tap water will remove many spots. However for those spots that will not move easily with water, you must use a spot cleaner. Select a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner. Most spot removers that are purchased over the counter leave too much soap residue and can cause yellowing. Avoid using foam carpet cleaners or any product that is not made specifically for carpet.  Apply spot cleaner sparingly to white terry cloth and gently massage spot causing it to transfer into the cloth. Never pour spot cleaner directly on carpet. If the product that you are using seems to cause the spot to re-soil over a few week period, discontinue use. Any spot that you are not able to remove, and for pet urine or feces, call your professional cleaner immediately.

Protective Coatings

Residential carpets are treated with stain resist properties and soil resistors known as Dupont Teflon . After a period of 2 to 3 years, some of the soil-resistor wears off. At that point you should consider having a professional carpet cleaner re-apply the treatment after professional cleaning. The soil resistor will help the soil slide off of the carpet easier when vacuuming, spots will be easier to remove, and professional cleaning will be more effective.

A 9x12 Oriental Rug Can Hold 87 Pounds of Soil Without Looking Dirty!

A study by the Eureka Company revealed that a 9x12 Oriental Rug can hold up to 87 pounds of soil without looking dirty. Oriental rugs are made to hide soil. Most Orientals are made with wool fibers that naturally hide soil. The hand knotting helps even more. This explains why an old Oriental rug still looks good! However, the dry soil is damaging to your rug, so be sure to have your rugs cleaned on a regular basis, use a good pad, vacuum them often, and rotate them once in a while.

Predicting Carpet Performance
We often we hear consumers comment that their present carpet has not held up like a previous carpet. Or maybe the complaint is a slight variation, such as "The carpet in my parents home has been down for 20 years and looks better than this carpet that we installed only five years ago." Or, "My neighbors have had their carpet four years longer and it looks better than ours."

Think of us not simply as carpet cleaners but as your personal carpet consultants. We study, research, and attend seminars and other industry events so we can keep our carpet education up to date. We are able to educate our customers about the choice of fiber, density, twists per inch, cushion, and other factors that effect carpet performance.

These are the same things most professionals consider when they provide criteria for the selection of new carpet. Although physical characteristics like color and appearance are important, they are not always successful predictors of long term performance. With so many variables in the construction of the carpet, plus the choice of cushion, installation, and use all effecting the performance, even professionals are not always looking at the right factors.
Appearance retention testing was introduced by the Carpet and Rug Institute's Performance Standards Committee in 1998. Two tests are now being put to good use measuring the performance of carpet in real life situations.  The first appearance retention test uses a machine called the hexapod drum to accelerate the natural fatigue carpet experiences when walked on. Carpet samples are mounted on the inside of a drum. A six sided “foot” inside the drum tumbles across the carpet simulating foot traffic. Soil is added to the drum to include the influence of dirt on how the carpet holds up.

After a specified length of time in the drum the sample is compared to an unworn sample and given a score that correlates with actual performance in homes.

The second performance test, mostly for commercial carpet, is known as the Roller Caster Test. This simulates the action of a person in an office chair rolling across the carpet. The caster is weighted down with 198 pounds to approximate the weight of a person and chair. The carpet sample is installed over a pad (cushion). This increases the flexing action of the carpet and seams. The caster is rolled across the carpet and seam 25,000 times. To pass the tests the sample must show no damage, such as the edges unraveling or delamination.

Real world appearance testing of both the face and backing reveal much more about the ultimate performance of the carpet over the long term than specifying the carpet's physical properties. These tests are frequently used in commercial carpet. As these tests become more widely used for residential carpet and the results included with other details about the carpet, retailers will be able to sell carpet based on performance and have confidence that the carpet will perform the way they expect.

If you are thinking about selecting new carpet, allow us to discuss your needs and help guide and simplify your buying process. There is no charge for this consultation. We want your carpet to look great when it is installed and stay that way for a long time. The best way to accomplish that goal is for us to help with the selection and be there to regularly maintain your carpet investment.

Shaw Revises Warranties to Reflect Requirements for CRI Seal of Approval Products and IICRC Certification
Dalton, GA - Following the company’s announcement in June of 2005, Shaw has revised its residential carpet warranties to require the use of CRI Seal of Approval products for carpet cleaning supplies and equipment for carpet manufactured after January 1, 2007. Effective January 1, 2008, the company will also require the use of IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) Certified Firms for professional cleaning services.
The CRI Seal of Approval Program was established to test and certify the performance of products and equipment used in carpet cleaning. Years of research has shown that about half of the carpet spot removal and cleaning products in the marketplace do not clean any better than water, and may also leave soil-attracting residues. The results of the use of these products have been shown to be a major source of consumer dissatisfaction with carpet. The CRI program offers consumers a quick, easy way to locate products that work well and do not damage their significant investment in carpet.
The new requirements have been included under "Homeowner Obligations" in Shaw’s residential warranty booklet covering its 3-, 4-, and 5-Star warranties. Revised wording addressing the changes is included in the company’s homeowner requirement that periodic cleaning by hot water extraction be performed at least once every two years. Whether the consumer elects to have the cleaning performed by a professional cleaning service or with a do-it-yourself system, the equipment must be “certified under the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Seal of Approval program.” The additional IICRC wording reads as follows:
“NOTE: Effective January 1, 2008, professional service must performed by an IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) certified firm.” IICRC Certified Firms must meet several stringent criteria that serve to protect the consumer. The firm must have at least one IICRC Certified Technician on all job sites, must have a business license, must carry both general liability and workers compensation insurance (where required), have an approved consumer complaint policy, and must agree to adhere to the IICRC code of ethics. All these protect the consumer against unscrupulous operators. Additional text cautions consumers on spot removal products: “(R)esearch has shown that many products sold for do-it-yourself spot removal clean poorly and their residues attract soil on the cleaned area rapidly afterward. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s Seal of Approval program tests and certifies products that meet stringent standards and thus clean effectively, without damage to your carpet.” The CRI website (www.carpet-rug.org) is listed for reference to these products.
Shaw has also made changes to its popular “Carpet Care” brochure. Under its vacuum cleaner recommendations, the company now advises consumers to make sure their vacuums are certified through the CRI Green Label testing program, again noting the organization’s website for details and listings. Under the brochure’s “Spot and Spill Removal” section, Shaw recommends its own R2x® Stain and Soil Remover (a CRI certified product) or other cleaning products that are listed in the CRI certification program. Finally, under the brochure’s hot water extraction recommendations, the requirement of CRI certification for cleaning products is repeated.
“We believe our recommendations and requirements will ultimately help consumers enjoy and appreciate our products more fully,” says Carey Mitchell, Shaw’s director of technical services. “This information reflects years of carpet cleaning research and testing and provides a firm foundation for proper maintenance that will enhance and extend a carpet’s useful life.”

How to Clean Juice Stains

Don’t throw out your upholstered furniture just because someone spilled some juice on your furniture. Removing juice stains can be accomplished by quickly rinsing with cool water.  Don't use detergent on the stain - it will set it and make it impossible to remove.  Instead, use white vinegar and blot to remove.  Clear fruit juices, such as grapefruit, orange, or apple can be removed by blotting out as much of the juice as you can, and then rinsing with cool water.  If needed, use a sponge and white vinegar to clean the spot, and then use a stain pretreater, such as Shout, and launder per the care label instructions.  On dry clean only items, sponge on a little white vinegar, and rinse with cool water.  If the stain persists, use a digestant enzyme paste on the stain, and let stand for 30 minutes.  Rinse.  Don't apply a digestant enzyme cleaner to silk or wool.  These are best handled by a dry cleaning professional.
Note: Always test an inconspicuous area for colorfastness, etc. before treating the exposed area. Also note that certain stains are permanent.

How Important is Vacuuming?
How important is vacuuming in the proper maintenance of carpeting?  A professional carpet cleaner will tell you that an ongoing frequent vacuuming schedule is an essential part of preserving the appearance and life span of any carpet.  However, it’s important for you to know that any professional cleaner who cleans your carpet should still pre-vacuum before cleaning.  Excuses why some don’t range from “There’s not enough time” to “The suction on my cleaning extractor is powerful enough that I don’t need to” to “It doesn’t really make that much difference.”

The truth of the matter is that vacuuming prior to any cleaning is a critical step that should never be skipped.  There’s an old saying in the carpet cleaning industry: “It’s easier to remove dust than mud.”  You can put this saying to a test by taking two pieces of loose-weave fabric and running one of them under water and wringing it out.  Sprinkle a bit of talc or baby powder on both pieces, then try sucking the powder through the back of the fabric with your vacuum.  You’ll be able to suck the powder through the dry piece but not the wet piece.  On the wet piece, the powder will cake and stick to the fabric fibers.

This same principle holds true in carpet cleaning.  Most dry dust and loose soil lifts out of the carpet during pre-vacuuming but, once dampened, clings to the carpet fibers.  Without exception, dry vacuuming should be the first step in any kind of carpet cleaning.  When we clean carpet, any dust that doesn’t come out with our dry vacuuming is taken care of by the professional-grade cleaning chemicals we use.  If you have questions about caring for your carpet, please give us a call.  We’re always happy to talk with you.

Why Do You Clean?

The carpet cleaning industry has identified five different reasons that consumers clean their carpet. Are they good reasons?  The Five Reasons

Reason #1: Events.
Experience proves that events drive more carpet cleaning than any other reason. Whether it is getting ready for Thanksgiving or mother in-law is coming, events create a sense of urgency that doesn’t exist otherwise. Although entertaining guests or family on clean carpet is a fantastic idea, don’t let this be the only reason you clean.

Reason #2: Visible Soil.
The second most common reason for cleaning is there is some type of visible soiling. Whether it is a spot or a traffic area, it just becomes unsightly. Many times waiting until your carpet is visibly soiled is waiting too late. Traffic area damage may have occurred, and spots may have become permanent.

Reason #3: Maintenance.
This is one of the best reasons to order cleaning. By properly caring for your carpet, you will dramatically increase the useful life of your carpet and it will look better all the time – even when mother in-law springs a surprise visit!

Reason # 4: Health.
This is also a great reason to clean. As your carpet does it’s job as a “sink” or a “filter” it eventually becomes “full”. It is catching pollens, bacteria, insecticides, asphalt, and many other contaminants that need to be cleaned out.

Reason #5: Problem Solving.
Occasionally something happens to a textile that appears to be a defect, but can actually be corrected through professional cleaning. Usually carpet manufacturers will require your carpet to be serviced by a certified professional cleaning firm before sending out a representative.
Regardless of what your reason is for cleaning, our company is at your service. We are available for the most routine or complex questions you may have.

Caring for Your Oriental Rugs

You have made a sizeable investment into your Oriental and specialty rugs. Here are some easy, basic steps for the care & protection
of a specialty or Oriental Rug.

Rotation
- To ensure even wear, your rug should be rotated once a year. Depending on the traffic, the rotation may vary from six months to two years.

Vacuuming
- Oriental rugs, like most carpeting, should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dirt and restore life to the fibers. Be sure not to vacuum the fringe with your beater bar! Use the end of a vacuum hose from a canister vacuum.

Padding
- A quality pad used under your rug helps protect it from dirt, wear and slippage.

Professional Cleaning
– Like all carpets, your Oriental and specialty area rugs should be professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Frequency of cleaning is influenced by the fiber content, weave, type and amount of soiling, traffic and wear, and environmental conditions. Call our office for further information on maximizing the performance of your fine investment textiles.

Spot and Spill Procedures
- Make sure you safely and immediately clean up spots and spills before they set.
·  First, soak up the excess liquid by blotting with a clean absorbent material. Do not brush or rub the stain. ·  Then spot-clean with a mild detergent-white vinegar-water solution. Do not over wet. ·  Rinse area thoroughly with water and a small amount of vinegar. Avoid wetting the rug's backing. ·  Blot dry until most of the moisture has been absorbed. ·  Allow to air dry. A fan or cool hair dryer can be used to hasten the drying process. ·  For stains that do not come out using these methods, ask our carpet cleaning specialists.

Education – Is It Worth It?

Cleaning has historically been viewed as a commodity - a menial task that anyone can do. Long before sophisticated textiles and complex indoor environments were created, cleaning may have been a simple, easy task, but that is no longer the case.
Complex flooring systems, sensitive fabrics, and new age soiling conditions have created a need for advanced education in the cleaning industry. Unfortunately, many cleaners (and consumers) have not understood this concept. We still see the ads for $12.95 per room for carpet cleaning and sofa cleaning for $45.00. The cleaner puts the ads out, never intending on cleaning for those prices, and the consuming public gets the idea that cleaning should be cheap.

These so called “cleaning” companies also happen to be the ones that don’t educate themselves or their employees. The result is that carpets and fabrics are being ruined every day by uneducated, uninformed, and sometimes downright unscrupulous carpet cleaners.  They are facing soiling conditions that they have never seen or heard of due to a lack of education. Or worse, they create a situation on a carpet or fabric that they have no idea how to fix. Some examples would be that they leave sticky residues in the carpet that causes the carpet or fabric to re-soil rapidly or discolor. Top-notch education is readily available in our industry. There is no excuse for cleaners not to educate themselves (and provide useful education to their clients). Part of the problem is since they have fallen into the trap of viewing cleaning as a commodity themselves, they can’t afford to educate themselves. Education is expensive, but the result of not getting the knowledge necessary is much more costly.

Our company invests a great deal in education. Not only do we spend thousands of dollars per year on education, we are heavily involved in our industry making us well connected with our industry leaders.  Many of the organizations offer certification programs that involve testing and ethics requirements. There are trade publications, web-sites, bulletin boards and a variety of opportunities to stay plugged in.   We attend every course we can in order to bring you the very best. Many of these courses require travel across the U.S. and can therefore be quite costly. We believe however, as fiber technology changes and as floor coverings become more complex, proper education is becoming even more important.

The bottom line is that you have a tremendous investment in your textiles and flooring systems and it is our duty to know how to best care for them. Understanding cleaning technology at the highest level helps to reduce cleaning residues and creates a healthier indoor environment by eliminating invisible germs and bacteria. It also empowers the cleaner to remove more soil, therefore creating a longer lasting fabric or floor

What is a Certfied Carpet Cleaner?

In shopping for carpet cleaning, you may have noticed the word “certified” being used in advertising. You may have seen a logo being used to feature certification. What does this mean to you as a client? Would you be surprised to learn that most carpet cleaning companies have no formal training? That they are not required to be licensed? That there is no requirement to have any certification whatsoever? Is training and certification important? After all, isn’t carpet cleaning a “menial” task that anyone can perform?

Actually, a carpet cleaning professional is working with one of your most valuable assets.  Should it be trusted with just anyone? Unfortunately, our industry is full of “rogues” that only care about how much money they can get from you, and nothing about the life of your carpeting. They do not care about the industry in which they work.  Have you ever noticed that in many states, air conditioning companies, plumbers, and pest control companies are required to be licensed? Not so for carpet cleaners. Fortunately for you, and for me, there are many fine people in the carpet cleaning industry that realize the standard must be raised. Those of us in that process help to police our own industry. In order to do this, associations and certification organizations were created. One such organization is called the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification). This organization provides certification courses and exams for the carpet cleaning industry. By attending these courses, carpet cleaners are taught about fiber identification, carpet construction, cleaning chemistry, cleaning methods, and professionalism.

These valuable concepts equip them to choose the proper procedures for cleaning your carpet. The certified firm is on the cutting edge of technology and change in our industry. A certified firm knows the right way to apply cleaning procedures and chemistry. A certified firm is working together with other certified firms to raise the standard of carpet cleaning in general, therefore providing you with a higher quality product.

What is difference between Truck Mount and Portable Carpet Cleaning?

First of all we provide both types of cleanings. So which method of carpet cleaning is better? If you live in area where we can have access to your home and business and the hose length is less than 400 feet than definitely truck mount carpet cleaning is the right choice. Why? Because the truck mount carpet cleaning unit has more power and can generate more heat which make our chemicals more effective and you will receive a high quality cleaning experience. What if I live on the 3rd floor in a condo away from a parking area? At a certain distance the truck mount carpet cleaning unit just  looses so much power and it also becomes a safety, tripping hazard to other people in the building. Now portable carpet cleaning, if its done right can be very effective. First you must heat the water with either a in-line heater or a portable heater you can heat up in a bucket. You will not get the heat that you get from a truck  mount carpet cleaning unit so you must add more agitation, chemical and TIME. But the most important ingredient in Carpet Cleaning is  EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE!

How come your company does not give Phone Quotes?

I get this question all the time. The reason we do not give phone quotes is because its not fair to the potential client or to us the company providing the carpet cleaning service. First this is what the bait and switch companies do, they give you a ridiculous quote on the phone so they can arrive at your front door knowing full well they are not going to honor their quote that they give you on the phone. Then they try to pressure you into using their service with per room charges (Read the fine print in their ads, 150 square feet means if your room is a 160 square feet they charge you double) or something crazy like pre-treatment for cleaning carpet(Which should always be done in carpet cleaning) and if you decide to use their carpet cleaning service and decide not to go for the switch you'll get an inferior steam cleaning.

The reason its not fair to the company providing the service because there is no way to know the exact square footage of your home. I get people all the time give me the square footage of their home over the phone and expect me to give them a quote this is impossible. Lets say you give me a number like 1000 square feet and I give you a quote of $350.00 over the phone and some bait and switch company gives you a quote of $199.00 over the phone that is quite a difference and you will probably go with the bait and switch company. But if I come to your home and give you a Free No-Pressure In Home Inspection and measure around your furniture and find out you only have 500 square feet of exposed carpet or cleanable carpet, now the price is $175.00, you get it in writing and you get a high quality cleaning that will actually save you money in the long run because you will be cleaning less often.

These are things I will need to know when I come to your home. How much hard surface is there? How much furniture is there and will some of it be moved? Are there some areas that don't even need to be cleaned? Will a good vacuuming be sufficient? Are there pet problems? Major or minor spotting (Red Spots)? What kind of material will we be cleaning (Nylon, Olefin, Polyester, Wool, Cut Pile or Loop)? Can it be split up into separate cleaning (Budget)? Plus a whole lot more.

What are the different treatment options with pet urine removal?

Superficial-
When animal odors are present in carpet or upholstery but there is little or no urine contamination - apply a bonding/encapsulating deodorizer according to directions. Proceed with carpet cleaning as usual. The bonding/encapsulating deodorizer will absorb odors on contact. Odors deeper in the tufts will be reached as you groom your prespray into the carpet.

Light- Apply an Enzyme Producing Deodorizing liberally to visible stains and other locations where you have detected urine. Allow as much dwell time as practical. Effective dwell time can range from 20 minutes to a couple of hours for light contamination. Your Enzyme Producing Deodorizer can be working while you set up your truck mount carpet cleaning equipment. Your carpet cleaning service can clean the affected areas using the bonding/encapsulating deodorizer in your prespray as described above.

Moderate-As the extent of contamination increases, so do the choices and the necessity for complex treatments increases. The basic process will be described first. Then we'll discuss additional steps that may be used. Prespray any visible stains using a Urine Pre-treatment. This is an acid side product that breaks down the alkaline salts. For best results, make a liberal application that will reach not only the stains on the surface but dried urine residues in the backing. Allow the urine pre-treatment at least 15 minutes dwell time. If all the carpet is being cleaned at this time, go ahead with your carpet cleaning now. Be sure to include a step to work your pretreatment into the face fibers.
After completing the rinse and extract step, saturate contaminated areas with Bonding/Encapsulating Deodorizer. For the best result, the Bonding/Encapsulating Deodorizer must come in contact with all the source of the odor. If the urine has reached the backing, the cushion and the subfloor then the Bonding/Encapsulating Deodorizer must also reach there. Be aware that the size of the stain on the surface will be significantly smaller than the area to which the urine has spread. As the urine reaches the backing it spreads horizontally before soaking through. On reaching the subfloor, the liquid again spreads laterally in addition to soaking into the flooring. What appears to be a 6" stain on the surface may have expanded to several square feet by the time it has penetrated the floor. Don't skimp on the application of the Bonding/Encapsulating Deodorizer. It must reach every place the urine went.
Use your Sub-Surface Extraction Tool to extract moisture from the spots you treated. You can thoroughly flush all contamination from the area by allowing additional water to flow to the spot while continuing to extract with the Sub-Surface Extraction Tool.

Severe-For complete odor removal in a severely affected carpet, an extensive treatment is required. Often a pet will "go" in the same general area for a period of a year or two or more before remediation is started. Considering the volume of urine deposited over time you can be sure that the cushion and the floor have been saturated.
Given the extent of contamination, we'll cover the steps necessary for complete odor removal. You and your customer can decide if it will be possible to skip any steps and still achieve an acceptable result.
1.Disengage the carpet. Turn back the carpet to expose the effected area. Some furniture moving may be required. The pad should be removed and thrown away. Inspect the floor. Wood floors should be cleaned followed by an application of your Enzyme Producing Deodorizer or they may be sanded. Concrete floors can be cleaned by wet mopping with Enzyme Producing Deodorizer. Floors should then be sealed with a pigmented shellac or a clear acrylic. Extend the application of the sealer at least 1' beyond contamination. While the carpet is turned back, examine the tackless strip, baseboards and walls. Any contaminated materials must be removed and replaced or cleaned and possibly sealed. After the sealer dries replace the pad.
2. Treat both the front and back side of the carpet with a solution of your Urine Pre-treatment. Allow 15 minutes or more dwell time.
3.Extract affected areas, both front and back. This will clean the carpets including removing urine.
4. Reinstall the carpet.
5. Saturate spray the carpet with your Enzyme Producing Deodorizer. Allow the solution to dwell 20 minutes to 24 hours depending upon the severity of the odor. For best results, extract out the Enzyme Producing deodorizer. Drying time will range from 24 to 48 hours. Ventilate. The final result will be evident about 24 hours after the carpets dry.
6. Clean and deodorize other surfaces that may have absorbed odors over time. If male animals were in the home, check for urine on vertical surfaces such as walls and furniture. A Bonding/Encapsulating Deodorizer can be used on upholstery, in wall cleaning solutions and for many other surfaces. Change the air return filters in the HVAC system. Check to see if the air handling system could be redistributing odors. If so, then the ductwork may need cleaning as well.

Fundamentals of Cleaning

1. Dry Soil Removal:
79% of dry is removed with your vacuum. This is one of the most important steps in  cleaning carpet.

2. Chemical Action:  Soil Suspension or preconditioning.Without the help of chemicals we would be doing little more than rinsing small amounts of the soil from the carpet.Water, by itself, is not a good cleaner.

3. Agitation: Consider the agitation clothes receive in a wash machine. The agitator in the center of the machine will continually work the clothes against themselves and through the water for periods up to 20 minutes long. Carpet, which is typically dirtier than clothes, does not give us the opportunity for that kind of agitation. We use Jet agitation, Wand agitation and Grooming brush agitation which is often overlooked.

4. Temperature:   The rule of 18. At 118 degrees
the effectiveness of our chemicals double and every 18 degrees it doubles again. No matter how hot your carpet cleaner says his Truck mount carpet cleaning machine will get  the optimum temperature you want at the wand tip is between 150 and a 180 degrees. Any hotter will damage some fibers.

5. Time:The forgotten step. No matter how powerful the machine, how great the chemical, you cannot do a complete job without allowing your chemical to dwell on the carpet. Sugars and starches take time to re-dissolve, but perhaps a greater problem is the oxidized and dried soils.  These oils, when left for years at a time, will turn to a binding resin that holds in many of the other carpet soils. A good quality pre-spray is designed to break these oily residues, but only when given sufficient time. This is why good quality carpet cleaning is not cheap. So if your carpet cleaner or carpet cleaning service is running through your home and can clean 1000 sq. ft. in 1 hour are your carpets really clean?

How to select a Professional Carpet Cleaning Service.

What distinguishes one carpet cleaning service from another?  This checklist will ensure that you have asked the right questions:

Do they have good references?
Our carpet cleaning service is considered by many to be one of the most reliable carpet cleaning companies in the area and 70% of our client live in Sandy and Draper Utah. We are often referred by some of the most seasoned professionals in the carpet industry. Our references are available upon request.

What kind of experience do they have?
Since 1987 we have cared for the finest of carpets and rugs. We have handled many specialty items and have seen many unusual situations. Whether the carpet is natural or synthetic, our experience makes us one of the most experienced carpet cleaners in the area. Cleaning carpet is a science.

Are they well educated in their field?
Sadly, most companies in our industry do not invest in educating themselves in cleaning carpet and their profession. Carpet Care and Repair is certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) in these areas: Carpet Cleaning, Upholstery & Fabric Cleaning, Commercial Carpet Maintenance, Carpet Repair & Re-installation, Water Damage Restoration, Stone, Masonry & Ceramic Tile Cleaning. Urine and Odor Removal. Register #78328 Expires 3/2011.

What systems do they use?
Many carpet cleaners use outdated equipment with components that do not work properly. Our vans are stocked with only the very best products from top manufacturers. We refuse to use discount products that tend to leave sticky residues behind and discolor the carpet. At our company, you can be assured that we use  state-of-the-art truck mount carpet cleaning equipment also known as a steam cleaner. The truck mount carpet cleaning machines we use are the most advanced systems available today. Our truck mount carpet cleaning equipment or steam cleaner does not over-wet the carpet. With our Hot water extraction cleaning process (Recommended by the world's largest carpet manufacturer Shaw Industries) you can expect our steam cleaner to remove maximum soil and the pile of the carpet will be "standing tall" again.

Do you get what you bargain for?
Never select a carpet cleaning service based on price. Cleaning carpet is not as cheap as some would like you to think. Their technique is to advertise a low price to get in the door so they can push their low-quality, ineffective goods at higher prices than the real professionals charge. A Quality carpet cleaner is not cheap but it will extend the life of you investment, and care for your carpeting in a way that will save you money in the long run.

Do they guarantee their work?
After having an uninformed, uneducated, or downright unscrupulous carpet cleaner in your home, the hardest part is getting them back to fix the problem. At our company, we offer a 100% money-back guarantee. We do not want to have anyone in our community that feels that they paid us for something they did not get.

Do they offer a referral program?
We want to reward you for sending customers to us. For each new customer you send us, they will receive a FREE room of professional carpet cleaning (200 square feet) and we will send you 10% referral certificate upon completion of their job towards your next carpet cleaning service. And remember that we guarantee our work, so help your friends, neighbors and co-workers enjoy high quality carpet cleaning
